London: Veteran journalist Chiran Sharma, who has been actively involved in journalism in the United Kingdom for over two decades, has been honored with the prestigious Spelthorne Civic Award 2025.
The award was presented during a special ceremony organized by the Spelthorne Civic Award Trust on Monday evening in Staines, London.
Established in 1982, the Civic Award Trust has been recognizing individuals who have made notable voluntary contributions across various sectors within the British community.
Sharma received the award in recognition of his remarkable efforts in promoting social integration, cultural understanding, and fostering strong ties between the British-Nepali community and residents of Spelthorne through Nepali media.
A former president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists UK, Sharma has been running the news portal NepalBritain.com for the past 18 years. He also serves as the UK correspondent for Nepal’s national daily, Nagarik News. Notably, Sharma is the first non-resident Nepali to receive this Civic Award.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Mayor of Spelthorne Med Wagh emphasized that meaningful change in society doesn’t always come from those in high-ranking positions, but often from ordinary individuals committed to serving their communities. He expressed his delight at being able to honor such individuals, noting that their unpublicized contributions have had a profound impact on strengthening local communities.
During the same event, over a dozen individuals from various fields—youth organizations, homelessness and poverty aid, community business, local churches, and environmental initiatives—were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to society.
In his acceptance speech, Sharma remarked that the award was not merely a personal achievement but a recognition of the contributions and growing acknowledgment of the British-Nepali community. He shared that the honor has further inspired him to continue working for the betterment of society.
The event was attended by council officials, councillors, and members of the Spelthorne Civic Award Trust.
