London: Rob Fenn, the British Ambassador to Nepal, has confirmed that there is no discrimination regarding pensions within the British Army and that all soldiers, including Gurkhas, are entitled to pensions.

Speaking in an interview with Ukaalo, where he discussed topics such as his experiences in Nepal, politics, diplomacy, and the British-Gurkha relationship, Fenn emphasized that the British Army currently does not discriminate between soldiers when it comes to pensions. “There is no doubt that an issue exists. However, it concerns a small group of individuals, for whom the pension was originally designed to be spent in Nepal, but now it is being used in the UK,” he explained.

He further added, “At present, there is no discrimination. All soldiers in the British Army receive pensions. Some individuals who chose to receive a smaller pension and move to the UK are now facing higher living costs here.”

Fenn also pointed out that many people in the UK earn low incomes, which is why the concept of a welfare state exists. “The pension issue will also be resolved. I have no doubt about the commitment of British ministers and military officials in this matter,” he assured.

The Ambassador clarified that, in terms of pensions, “The only thing the British government cannot provide is a retroactive change to pension packages. This issue is not just about Gurkha soldiers, but is also related to the effectiveness and efficiency of financial services.”

However, he added, “There is a potential to address this issue and ensure Gurkha soldiers receive a dignified retirement. We are eager to provide as much assistance as possible.”

Fenn also praised the work of the Gurkha Welfare Trust, a charitable organization that supports Gurkha veterans. “The Gurkha Welfare Trust has done significant work in Nepal. I have visited many villages and schools, and it is a charitable organization working for the welfare of Gurkha soldiers in Nepal,” he said.

He shared an example of a Gurkha who had served in the British Army and is still receiving regular health checkups through the Trust’s support. “The Gurkha Welfare Trust has continuously done excellent work, and many Gurkha veterans have benefited from it. This organization operates with the help of the British government and people,” Fenn added.
